Nature Journal: Bird Feeder

One of my favorite things to do with my children is observe nature!  One way to attract nature to our backyard is through a bird feeder. We have been able to observe many birds through the winter and now into spring.  Above is a bird feeder hanging on a shepherd hook placed out in our yard.  We purchased kid-friendly binoculars and placed them by our bay window for our toddler to use as she watches the birds!  Lastly, we purchased Birds, Nests & Eggs by Mel Boring as a resource guide to extend our learning of the different birds we might see!

Because we enjoined our bird watching experience so much we wanted to try a window feeder for an up close and personal bird watching view.  As you can see from the picture above we have enjoined birds practically right in our living room!  We have seen mostly cardinals, finches, chickadees, and just a few sparrows.  We try to detour the sparrows by using sunflower seeds.  Also, we have had no squirrels on the window feeder!

To document our nature experience we added a page to our nature journal (pictured above).  We simply water-colored a picture of a bird at a bird feeder then glued on sunflower seeds to the feeder. Picking up the small sunflower seeds and gluing was a great fine motor activity!  If you would like to download this activity you can find it HERE!

Lastly, while we completed our nature page we observed the "busy bird feeder" on our iPad!  It was fun to hear the birds while we completed our nature journal page!
