Theology Lesson FOR KIDS #23

What is Sin?
"And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, 'You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.'" Gen 2:16-17

I really enjoyed this chapter by Dr. Ware.  Sin is something we explain to our child at an early age.  In fact, my four year old daughter just memorized, "All have sinned." Rom. 3:23 for her Wednesday night church program.  We may begin explaining sin as "the bad things we do" but if we want to go deeper Dr. Ware provides great instruction!

First he encourages us to to, "read the early verses of Genesis 3 and then consider what we can learn about sin from this passage."  He helps the reader pull out three main points from this passage...
  1. "Sin always works by tricking us, or deceiving us, into doubting things that are true and believing things that are false."
  2. "Sin is lived out through turning from God and his ways in order to do what WE think is best."
  3. "Sin always results in harm, ruin, and death."
"Sin always involves, then, a desire in our hearts to live our own way, not God's way.  Sin always involves thinking we know what is best, not God.  Sin always leads us to turn from God and his ways because we think that our ways will end up better for us than God's ways." Dr. Ware

Consider these Ideas for Teaching Theology to Children...
  • Don't be afraid to challenge your child to THINK!  In a world where children have many thoughtless and effortless tasks (video games, TV, and computer time) challenge your child to THINK through great truths of the gospel!
  • Take your time to soak up truth!  Don't rush through a lesson, allow time, opportunities, and study to help resonate a specific truth within them (and us!!).
  • Begin an individual journal or family journal about the theological truths learned, review it regularly.
  • Pray that the Lord would give you wisdom and understanding as you seek to honor Him in the teaching and training of your children.
  • Pray that God would open the eyes of your child's HEART that they would EMBRACE the gospel not just KNOW the content intellectually (see this related post).
  • Talk about these truths DAILY and when teachable moments present themselves take advantage of them!

Theology Lesson FOR KIDS #22

Features of Being Human
Last month we dove into what it means to be made in the image of God!  This month we will continue to work through biblical facts of being human!  Dr. Ware shares with us four additional aspects of our human nature.
  1. "We are creatures, and God is the creator."  This first point will help you explain to your child that creation points to a beautiful, special creator God.  God has allowed us to know this through the bible and through observing creation.  The human body alone is such a wonderful masterpiece designed and formed by God!  In response we humbly submit ourselves to our  God!
  2. "God has given us the ability to know the difference between right and wrong."  The second point allows us to teach our children that we have a moral nature unlike God's other created things (like animals).
  3. "All that God created was good (Gen1:31)."  This means that our bodies and souls were part of God's good creation.  God invented the human body...God was kind with how he made our bodies...he gave us taste buds that make our food enjoyable...eyes to enjoy seeing, and so forth!!
  4. "God made human beings male and female."   This point may also be a good way to discuss the different God-ordained roles that men and women have (both equal before God yet both have different roles).  I would like to direct you to the web-site Desiring God.   It has many FREE resources for you to use as you seek to train your own mind and heart biblically!  Click HERE for a good resource that goes along with point #4!

Theology Lesson FOR KIDS #21

Made in God's Image

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
 Genesis 1:26-27

Dr. Ware shares two main ideas that help us understand what it means that we are made in God's image.  Before he presents theses ideas he addresses that both men and women are equally made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-28), humans have a calling to rule or have dominion, and Jesus helped us understand what it means to be the image of God as he lived his life and showed dominion over creation (Colossians 1:15-17).
  1. Dr. Ware's shares, "The main way we are made like God is through the qualities that he has put within us."  We are to be holy, loving, forgiving, truthful, faithful as God is.  Yet sin came into the world and we are not this way therefore we need to be REMADE into the image of God once again.  Because of what Christ has done for us through his life, death, and resurrection we can trust Christ for our forgiveness of sin.  We then can begin the process of being remade into the image of God, as we are made like Christ (Colossians 3:8-11, Colossians 1:15, John 1:14).
  2. Then Dr. Ware shares, "The image of God is not only about the qualities of our inner lives, it is also about our responsibilities, what we are called to do."  Jesus was the perfect image of God, obeying God perfectly and completely.  Jesus shows us what it means to be the image of God.  So being made in God's image is not only having the qualities that are like God's qualities but acting in the ways God would act
"God is at work remaking his own people to be like Christ in their character and in their conduct.  Only by God's grace can this happen.  And as it does, God's people enter into more of the joy of what it means to be re-created in the image of Christ, the perfect image of God." Dr. Ware

Theology Lesson FOR KIDS #20

Human Beings are the Greatest Part of God's Creation

"When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor."
Psalm 8:3-5

We've moved into the fourth section of Dr. Ware's book.  This section will focus on, "Our Human Nature and Sin."  Today's focus is, human beings are God's masterpieces of creation!  Dr. Ware gives us the following truths to consider for this...
  1. God created man on the last day of creation, God's grand finale was humans!
  2. Humans are the only creation made in the image of God.
  3. God gives us the right to rule over the animals of the earth.  God views mankind as having a special place in authority over creation.
  4. "God values who we are, created in His image, more then He values any other part of His creation.  This can be seen since the Bible describes God's plan and work on behalf of sinful humans, made in his image."
Dr. Ware then helps us form some principals in light of the four truths above....
  • First, "The only reason human being are so special is because God made us this way.  We had absolutely nothing to do with it...we need to be humble, not proud, in light of God's goodness to make us in His image."
  • Second, "We should see human life as very dear and precious, never to be taken lightly...humans are a much greater value in God's eyes than any other part of creation.  God created things this way, and we should see them the way God does."
I appreciated the first principal to consider as I help my children understand how special they are  NOT in their own doing but because of God's!  This gives the glory to God!

Theology Lesson FOR KIDS 19:

God Controls Pain and Suffering in the World

In this session we conclude Dr. Ware's third chapter, "Creator and Ruler of All."  I have enjoined this chapter as it addresses the difficult questions of good/evil and the question "why?"  To read the posts related to this chapter please see below (click on the title to be redirected to that particular topic/post).

#19 God Controls Pain and Suffering in the World (below)
In this section Dr. Ware points children to five principals that help them think correctly about suffering from a biblical and Christian point of view.
  1. Suffering is not, in itself, something that lasts forever.  In Revelation 21:3-4 it speaks of pain and suffering NOT being part of the new re-creation to come! Praise God!!
  2. Suffering is often planned and used by God to bring about good.  Dr. Ware shares several ways God may use suffering...Suffering can be used by God as a tool of judgement, to call children back to himself, enable believers to grow, to show the greater strength and glory of God, so that believers will be better able to help others who, in similar ways, experience suffering in their lives, and suffering is part of being a believer of Jesus.
  3.  God has promised his children that everything in their lives, even suffering, will be used for their good.  Romans 8:28, 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Ephesians 5:20, and Psalm 34:10
  4. God is more concerned with our character then our comfort, with our holiness rather than our happiness.  James 1:2-4 and Romans 5:3-5
  5. We should pray for God to remove our suffering while we also pray for God to help us accept our suffering.  Example of Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
Even in the midst of difficulty God is on the throne, He is in control, and we can trust Him!  Press On!!

Theology Lesson FOR KIDS #18

Our Responsibility in the World God Controls
Dr. Ware reminds us of the story of Joseph from Genesis 37 to illustrate God's sovereignty and man's responsibility, "God is sovereign (He's in control), and we are responsible (we are accountable for the actions we do)."

God allowed Joseph, in Genesis 37, to be sold into slavery by his jealous brothers.  Yet God took care of Joseph.  Joseph's brothers meant to harm Joseph yet God used it to bring about His good plan.  Years later when Joseph encounters his brothers he even tells them, "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good (Genesis 50:20)."  Dr. Ware shares, "This story shows us that even though wicked people carry out things to harm others and to bring about what is wrong, yet God works in and through those very wicked actions.  And the fact that God works in and through them makes us sure that his good purposes are bought about even though wicked deeds are done.  Because of this, the wicked people who have done these bad things are rightly guilty of doing what was wrong.  But God, who works through what they have done, is worthy of praise since he brings about the good that he has planned through them."

Furthermore Dr . Ware uses the example of the cross.  Wicked men put Jesus on the cross yet God the Father also planned for Jesus to die on the cross for us.  John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life."  also Isaiah 53:10 says, "it was the will of the Lord to crush him (Jesus)."

Dr. Ware concludes, "The true and living God rules over everything that's good and everything that's bad.  But he does so in such a way that he always brings about the good that he has planned, while wicked people are rightly held responsible for the wrong they've done...Although we cannot understand this fully, faithfulness to God and to his word means that we believe both of these teachings of the bible are true."

Specific Ideas for Teaching Lesson eighteen to Children:
  • Fill out a T-Chart of Joseph's story.  On one side list the harm that wicked men intended for Joseph then on the next side list how God provided, met Joseph's needs, and how God fulfilled his good plan.
  • Recall other examples of biblical characters who faced difficulty and how God's good was demonstrated, make a T-Chart!
More General Ideas for Teaching Theology to Children...

I have been blessed by our study using the book, "Big Truths for Young Hearts" and I hope you have been too!  Before I move on to the next chapter I wanted to share a book I have been reading though and have been absolutely blown away by!  The book is titled, "Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ" by John Piper.  You can download a FREE PDF copy Here!  The book is divided into short chapters (4-6 pages) followed by a closing prayer.  You could use this as a morning/evening devotion and easily work through the book in just 13 days!

I am convicted that in order to teach our children Christ we must know Him well.  This book will help you in that endeavor.  Today I have attached chapter 5, "The Winds and The Waves Still Know His Voice" in an effort to extend our thinking from the last blog post, "God Controls All Bad Things in the World."  Read and be blessed!

Chapter 5
The Waves and the Winds Still Know His Voice
(Taken from the book "Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ" by John Piper)

In July 1995, my wife, Noël, two of our children, and I
huddled on the floor, away from all windows, under the
direct path of Hurricane Erin in Pensacola, Florida. One
magnificent old pine tree sheared off the corner of our bed-
room as it fell. During the eye of the storm we walked out-
side in a perfect calm to see the devastation. Then, about
twenty minutes later, we hid again against the backside of
the storm as it brought down chimneys and crushed cars
under snapped-off oak limbs as thick as hundred-year-old
trees.

It was a heart-wrenching, worship-filled moment in the
face of raw, unstoppable power. The losses were painful,
though nothing like the destruction of Hurricane Mitch in
Honduras in 1998, which took 10,000 lives—and which in
turn was small compared to the cyclone that killed 131,000
in Bangladesh on April 30, 1991, and left nine million
homeless. Beneath the wreckage of such wind you have two
choices: worship or curse.

It was wind that killed Job’s ten children. “A great wind
came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of
the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are
dead” (Job 1:19). When boils were added to that, Job’s wife
said, “Curse God and die” (Job 2:9). But Job’s response to
the death of his children was different: “Job arose and tore
his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and
worshiped. And he said . . . ‘The LORD gave, and the LORD
has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD’” (Job
1:20-21). And when the boils were added to his grief, he
said to his wife: “Shall we indeed receive good from God
and not receive adversity?” (Job 2:10, author’s translation).

Both, not just the one, are the work of God and the
ground of worship. Later in Job, Elihu says it clearly:
“From its chamber comes the whirlwind . . . the clouds scatter
[God’s] lightning. They turn around and around by his guid-
ance, to accomplish all that he commands them on the face
of the habitable world. Whether for correction . . . or for
love, he causes it to happen . . . stop and consider the won-
drous works of God” (Job 37:9-14).

Psalm 29 considers and celebrates this one wonder: the
thunderstorm. “The God of glory thunders . . . the voice of
the LORD is full of majesty. The voice of the LORD breaks
the cedars.... The voice of the LORD. . . strips the forests
bare, and in his temple all cry, ‘Glory!’” (Psalm 29:3-5, 9).

It is the glory of God to bare his mighty arm in wind and
thunder. “The LORD is great.... Whatever the Lord pleases,
he does, in heaven and on earth. . . . [He] makes lightnings
for the rain and brings forth the wind from his storehouses”
(Psalm 135:5-7). “Praise the LORD from the earth, you
great sea creatures and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and
mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word” (Psalm 148:7-8).
Isaac Watts had his feet on the earth and his head in heaven
when he wrote, “Clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order
from Thy throne.”

Therefore it is not surprising that when Christ came into
the world, all nature bowed to his authority. He com-
manded the wind and it obeyed. And when the disciples saw
it they wondered. And then worshiped. “And a great wind-
storm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat. . . .
And [Jesus] awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the
sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a
great calm. . . . [The disciples] were filled with great fear and
said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even wind and
sea obey him?’” (Mark 4:37-41).

Water obeyed Jesus in more ways than one. When he
commanded, it became “solid” under his feet, and he
walked on it. When the disciples saw this they “wor-
shiped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God’”
(Matthew 14:33). Another time, he commanded water,
and it became wine at the wedding of Cana. In response,
John says, he “manifested his glory. And his disciples
believed in him” (John 2:11). Wind and water do what-
ever the Lord Jesus tells them to do. Be still. Bear weight.
Become wine. Natural laws were made by Christ and
alter at his bidding.

The composition of all things was not only created by
Christ (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 1:2), but is also
held in being moment by moment throughout the whole
universe by his will. “He . . . upholds the universe by the
word of his power” (Hebrews 1:3). “In him all things hold
together” (Colossians 1:17). Jesus Christ defines reality in
the beginning and gives it form every second.

Fatalities, fevers, fish, food, fig trees. Anywhere you
turn, Christ is the absolute master over all material sub-
stance. With a word he commands the dead to live again.
“Lazarus, come out” (John 11:43). “Young man, I say to
you, arise” (Luke 7:14). “‘Talitha cumi,’ which means,
‘Little girl . . . arise’” (Mark 5:41). He rebuked a fever and
it left Peter’s mother-in-law (Luke 4:39). He planned for a
fish to swallow a coin and then get caught with Peter’s hook
(Matthew 17:27). He took five loaves and fed five thousand
men (Matthew 14:19-21). And he made a fig tree wither
with his curse (Mark 11:21).

Now we have a choice. Worship or curse. There was a
group at Lazarus’ grave whose facts were right and hearts
were wrong. They said, “Could not he who opened the eyes
of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?” (John
11:37). The answer to that question is, Yes. Jesus timed his
coming to Lazarus’ home so as to let his friend die. He waited
two days, then said, “Lazarus has died, and for your sake I
am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe” (John
11:14-15). Yes, he could have saved him. Just as he could
have saved Job’s children, and ten thousand more in
Honduras and Guatemala by commanding Hurricane Mitch
to turn out to sea, the way he did in Galilee.
Will we worship or will we curse the One who rules the
world? Shall sinners dictate who should live and who should
die? Or shall we say with Hannah, “The LORD
kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol [the grave] and raises
up” (1 Samuel 2:6)? And shall we, with ashes on our heads,
worship with Job, “Blessed be the name of the LORD” (Job
1:21)? Will we learn from James that there is good purpose
in it all: “You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and
you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is com-
passionate and merciful” (James 5:11)? Should we not then
face the wind and stand on the waves of affliction and sing
with Katharina von Schlegel,

Be still, my soul! Your God will undertake
To guide the future as He has the past;
Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;

All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul! The waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

A PRAYER
O Lord, the suffering in the world is so widespread and
the pain is so great! Have mercy, and waken the souls
of suffering millions to the hope of some relief now and
unsurpassed joy in the age to come. Send your church,
O God, with relief and with the word of the Gospel
that there is forgiveness of sins through faith in Christ
and that no suffering here is worth comparing to the
glory that will be revealed to the children of God.
Protect your church, Father, from callous thoughts
about calamities that leave millions destitute, and pro-
tect her also from cowing to critics, like Job’s wife, who
cannot trust the wisdom and power and goodness of
Christ in the midst of inexplicable misery. Oh, help our
unbelief. Incline our hearts to your Word and to its
assurances that you “work all things according to the
counsel of your will” and that “no purpose of yours
can be thwarted” and that you are doing good and act-
ing wisely in ways that we cannot now even dream.
Keep us in peace, O Lord, and forbid that we murmur
and complain. Grant us humble and submissive hearts
under your mighty hand. Teach us to wait and watch
for your final and holy purposes in all things. Grant
that we would “rejoice in hope” even when present cir-
cumstances bring us to tears. Open the eyes of our
hearts to see the greatness of our inheritance in Christ,
and send us with tender hands to touch with mercy the
miseries of the world. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
