Theology Lesson FOR KIDS #11:

God the Son

It is critical for our children to understand that Jesus Christ (the son) IS GOD!!  Many will admit that Jesus was a man who lived on earth but not all recognize him as God.  When people do not accept and believe that Jesus Christ is indeed God their eyes are blinded to the truth that will save them!  Romans 10:9 says, "If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

It matters that Jesus was both fully God and man!  Dr. Ware shares, "He had to be man in order to live a perfect human life and die in our place.  BUT he had to be God so that the payment he offered would meet the standard that God his Father required."  We could not pay the enormous penalty of our sin only Christ could!  In turn He receives all the glory!  We boast in Christ alone!

Dr. Ware shares several biblical truths that teach and show Jesus is God.  Let's put to memory these biblical truths so we can be ready to give  an answer for the glorious hope that we have!

1. Jesus is God

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1: 1

The "Word" refers to Jesus.  Jesus was in the beginning (he was not created, he has always been) he was with God, AND JESUS WAS GOD!  Watch or read John Piper's sermon on John 1: 1 HERE

2. Jesus created everything! He is God!

"Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." John 1: 3
"For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him" Colossians 1: 16

Ponder this...If Jesus created everything then who created him?  No one! Nothing! He has always been!  Jesus cannot be made by something else.  Jesus is God!

3. Jesus forgives sin! He is God!

Dr. Ware shares from Mark 2 :1-12 when Jesus forgives the sins of a man that was brought to him for healing.  The Jewish leaders rebuke the act saying, "Who can forgive sins but God alone?"  The Jewish leaders missed it completely!!  God was standing in their midst!  Because Jesus was God He was able to forgive sin!

4. Jesus is eternal, Jesus is unchangeable, He is God!

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."
Hebrews 13: 8
“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.” Hebrews 1: 10-12

5. Jesus is worshiped as God! He is God!

"And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says “Let all God’s angels worship him.” Hebrews 1: 6

Dr. Ware points out that, "the bible is clear that only God is to be worshiped (Exodus 20:1-5, 34 :14, Deuteronomy 6: 13)...So how amazing it is to see that Jesus is worshiped and that his Father even wants others to worship Jesus."

6. Jesus declares that he is God!

“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”John 8:58

Dr. Ware ends with this, "By (Jesus) saying this (in John 8: 58 above) he was connecting himself to the very God of Israel who in Exodus 3: 14 gave as his name "I AM."  Jesus is the God of Israel, the true and eternal God!

Ideas for Teaching Lesson Eleven to Children:
  • Read other passages where the word "God" is used for Jesus: John 20: 28, Romans 9: 5, Philippians 2: 6, Colossians 1: 15, Titus 2: 13, Hebrews 1: 8, 2 Peter 1: 1, or 1 John 5: 20
  • Study these truths and know them well!
  • Have your child answer why Jesus is God.  Encourage them to quote scripture to support this great truth!
  • Pray that God would open the eyes of your child's HEART that they would EMBRACE the gospel not just KNOW the content intellectually (see this related post).
  • Talk about these truths DAILY and when teachable moments present themselves take advantage of them!

  1. This is a great lesson! I've always struggled with how to explain the Trinity in a simple way to children, and this is really helpful. I love the way that the emphasis is placed upon making it "heart-knowledge," rather than merely head knowledge and also really appreciate the emphasis placed upon praying that the Holy Spirit will open our children's hearts to these deep truths.
